Buffy Summers
Buffy was born in 1981 to (now divorced) Hank and Joyce Summers. After her first watcher was killed and she burned down the school gymnasium, she and her mother moved to Sunnydale. There she began her training under her new watcher, Rupert Giles. In high school she made a group of friends who knew of her "secret" who are often referred to as the "Scooby Gang." They often assist her in her research of funky monsters and even in her slaying duties. Maybe this is one of the reasons she is amoung (if not the) strongest slayer that ever was. She began a doomed relationship with the sexy vampire-with-a-soul Angel. After they realized that they couldn't be together, (it was like a Romeo and Juliet thing. He's a vimpire, she's a vampire slayer, see the problem?) he took off and went to live in LA. But, they are on pretty good terms and occasionally there is a tie in show with her show and his spin off "Angel". She is currently dealing with being torn out of heaven and shoved back on earth- what she refers to as hell. She's biting her tounge and letting her fellow Slayerettes think they saved her from hell, but she has confided in Spike.
Quotable Buffy:
Buffy: "Yeah, he's some kind of demon looking for an all-powerful thingimibob and I've got to stop him before unholy havoc's unleashed and it's another Tuesday night in Sunnydale." (from "Revelations")
Willow Rosenberg
Willow is Buffy's bestfriend. She was raised in a jewish household and is the, um, smart one of the Scooby Gang. She is at times shy, akward, and naive. But she is brave too. She lost her virginity to werewolf ex-boyfirend Oz. She has now come out of the closet with her girlfriend- Tara. Willow is also a practicing Wiccan (it's a form of witchcraft). She has dusted her fair share of vampires but is more into the researching part of slaying and has recently shown her awesome strength at witchcraft by raising Buffy from the dead.
Qutoable Willow:
"It's horrible. That's me as a vampire? I mean, I'm so evil, and skanky [softly, to Buffy] and I think I'm kind of gay." (from "Doppelgangland")
Xander Harris
(Short for Alexander LaVelle Harris)He's lived in Sunnydale all his life. At first glance he could be considered the loser of the Scooby Gang. He often dresses kinda scrubby, doesn't go to college (nor does he plan to), and for the longest time he lived in the basement of his disfunctional parent's house. Poor Xander has never excelled academically, and until season 3, nor in his love life. He had pursued a substitute teacher (who turned out to be a praying mantis that wanted to mate with him and eat off his head), an exchange student who ended up being a mummy, and even pined after Buffy for the longest time. But he did manage to get the most popular girl in school (Cordelia Chase) to date him for quite a while in high school. Now he is engaged to ex-demon Anya who tends to bring out the best in him.
Quotable Xander:
"Sometimes I think about two women doing a spell...and then I do a spell myself." (from "The Yoko Factor")
Rupert Giles
He is Buffy's watcher. That's like a trainer and teacher. He comes from a whole family of them. In his younger years he played around in the occult and summoned a demon named Eyghon. It was a whole bad thing. He was the librarian at Sunnydale high school, and it's a good thing no one ever wanted to check out any books, because he filled it with ancient texts of demons and such. Since Buffy blew up the library on graduation day, Giles has opened up a new shop called the Magic Box. His romantic scene has included Jenny Calendar, an on-again-off-again relationship with a woman from Londan named Olivia, and even one night with Buffy's mom, Joyce Summers. (they were under a spell.)He has recently moved to London after Buffy's death and made Anya an active partner in the Magic Shop, leaving her to run it.
Quotable Giles:
Giles: "Don't taunt the fear demon."
Xander: "Why? Can he hurt me?"
Giles: "No, it's just...tacky."
(from "Fear, Itself")
Spike
AKA William the Bloody. His nickname (William the Bloody) ironically was given before he became a vampire. When courting a young woman in good old Brit, he wrote poetry for her which his "friends" criticized. The woman, afraid of what others thought, told Spike, "You're beneath me." Later that night Spike was sired. Spike has spent the next couple hundred years killing two vampire slayers and torturing his victims with railroad spikes to show his old friends how tough he really was. Spike currently resides in a tomb (a pretty nicely fixed up one), and has had a chip installed in his brain which prevents him from harming any LIVING thing. So when he gets really bored he goes out and fights a few demons. The fact that he is harmless is the only reason Buffy hasn't killed him. But, by some odd chance, Spike has developed a crush on Buffy and has taken to stealing pictures of her, and even a pair of her underware. He recently has proven his decency to Buffy when he was willing to die rather than expose Dawn (Buffy's younger sister and a key to all demensions) as the key to Glory. (The evil expelled goddess of a demon demension. He had a sex-toy Buffy-Bot created which the Scooby Gang used in Buffy's absence. Buffy has become quite a friend of Spike's recently, confiding secrets in him rather than her human friends.
Quotable Spike:
"We like to talk big, vampires do. 'I'm gonna destroy the world'--just tough-guy talk, strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. Truth is, I like this world. You got dog racing, Manchester United, and you got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. A real passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Good-bye, Picadilly, farewell Leicestre bloody Square, you see what I'm saying?" (from "Becoming, Part 2")
Cordelia Chase
Queen C. She was the most popular girl in school, but by the time she graduated her whole life took a 360. She lost her reputation as the most popular by dating Xander her junior year. She dumped Xander after she caught Willow and Xander in a passionate smooch. She then lost all her money when her dad was caught cheating the IRS. So friendless, boyless, and cashless she headed to LA after graduation to try her hand at acting. That hasn't gone well so far, but she did run into Angel and Wesley. She has aquired the "sight" or the ability given to her by the Powers that Be to have visions of people in danger. This has helped her and Angel Investigations in their fight against evil. It has also helped her earn a royal chair as official Queen C in the Host's home demension.)
Quotable Cordy:
"That's so cute, planning life as a loser. Most people just turn out that way, but you're really taking charge." (To Xander in "Bad Girls")
Angel/Angelus
Ah, Angel.... The vampire cursed with a soul. Let's start at the beginning, before Buffy. Angel is 300 some odd years old (I can't remember the exact age). During his youth (as a human) he was a tortured soul. He was rebellious, drinking and running around against his father's wishes. The last time he saw his father as a human he said he would never be back. Soon after he was sired by Darla. He killed his family in vengance of his father whom said he would never amount to anything. He thought he had won, but as Darla said, his father's disapproval would torture him forever. Together, Angel and Darla toured the world causing much rucus and bloodshed. At one point he tortured a young girl named Drusilla, who already had psychic abilities as a human. He drove her insane before he sired her and she has been quite the crazy vampire. She in turn sired Spike and the four caused even more rucus. Then came the fateful day that Darla brought a young gypsy girl to Angel as a presant. She turned out to be a gypsy princess and the tribe cursed him with a soul. For a few hundred years he wandered around the world drinking blood from rats and other vermin, suffering from complete guilt of his actions. Then he spotted Buffy in LA, just as she was learning of her duties as a slayer. He followed her to Sunnydale and fell in love with her. After much time together, Buffy gave him the gift of her virginity. In return he lost his soul and became Angelus- his former evil-self. (The only way to break the curse is for Angel to achieve pure happiness.) He began torturing Buffy, much like he did Drusilla. He killed Gile's girlfriend-Jenny Calandar- who happened to be a member of the gypsy clan that cursed him. She was sent to make sure Angel did not lose his soul. Thankfully a disk that contained the curse had fallen behind her desk and Willow later found it and recursed him. But just as he became Angel again- Buffy was forced to kill him to close the hellish demon demension he had just opened. Later the next season, by unknown means he returned to Sunnydale. He had been in the demon dimension for hundreds of years (in demon demension years- time goes by differently there). Buffy nursed him back to "nice Angel" and they tried their hardest not love each other. At the end of Buffy's graduation (and after they had saved the world from the mayor's Ascension) Angel leaves Buffy and Sunnydale. He moves to LA where he begins his own Private Investigator business (specializing in the supernatural of course) that helps him try to balance the good he is doing with all of the bad he has done.
Quotable Angel:
Angel:"You still my girl?"
Buffy:"Always." (From "Enemies")
Daniel Osbourne
AKA Oz.Oh Oz. He is one of my most favorite Buffy characters ever. Oz was a year ahead of everyone else in High School until he failed his senior year. Willow and him hooked up the summer before his senior year and developed a deep relationship. He has held a standard of cool with his quite composure and his short, comedic statements. He soon discovered after Willow and him hooked up that ater his young cousin had bit him he turned into a warewolf. The gang took turns three nights out of the month (in Joss' world a person is transformed into a wolf the nights before and after as well as the night of a full moon) to gaurd Oz in a cage in the library. It was once feared that Oz had broken out and killed someone when Xander had fallen asleep on the job. (Thankfully he didn't). His major fear was that he would harm Willow while he was in wolf form, and many times came close. Willow was the only thing to this lead singer of the band Dingoes Ate My Baby when Veruca, another singer caught his eye. It turns out that she was a warewolf as well. She embraced her wolf within and considered her human form a disguse rather than how Oz considered himself a wolf only three nights a month. Controlled by the wolves, they mate and Willow catches them. Brutally hurt she tries to harm them through a curse, but stops just as Veruca arrives to kill her. Veruca locks herself in the room with Willow as she wolfs out. Oz arrives, also wolfed, and kills Veruca. Just as he turns to attack Willow, Buffy arrives and shoots him with a tranquilzer gun. Oz leaves to come to terms with his wolf side and travels to Tibet where he learns through meditation and herbs to control the wolf compleatly. He comes back to Sunnydale to give Willow the good news, but discovers she's falled in love with Tara. Oz leaves once again and so far has only reappeared in Willow's dreams.
Quotable Oz:
Cordelia:"Okay, well, I personally don't think it's possible to come up with a crazier plan."
Oz:"We attack the Mayor with hummus."
Cordelia:"I stand corrected."
Oz:"Just keeping things in perspective." (From "Graduation Day, Part Two")
Riley Finn
Riley first appeared as a teaching assistant to Buffy and Willow's psych teacher, Maggie Walsh. It was later revealed that both Finn and Walsh were part of a government agency titled the Initiative. They caught and experimented with the monsters of Sunnydale. They are in fact responsible for the chip in Spike's head. Though the Initiative has deep knowledge of the biology of the monsters of Sunnydale, they are not as sharp on the supernatural factors of Sunnydale. In fact, it was believed that the Slayer was a myth. Eventually Buffy and Riley hooked up. Riley thought they were a perfect match, with him being secret agent commando guy and she the Slayer. She was a little disappointed though. After all she had been through with Angel she was looking for Mr. Joe Normal. But things perked up and they began to love each other. With the downfall of the Initiative and the death of Maggie Walsh it was discovered that Riley had been taking drugs (he thought they were vitamins) and his "super" strength was due to that. He went through a little rough spot, now he had a girlfriend who was stronger than he was. He also had a chip removed out of his chest that was connected with his super powers. And now he WAS Mr. Joe Normal. He came to terms though and still aided Buffy and the Slayerettes when he could- he still had connections in the military. But when Buffy's mom got sick with a brain tumor he went on the back burner. He realized this and wasn't happy. He began "affairs" with vampires. He paid them for them to suck his blood. It made him feel that he was needed. The government offered him an undercover job for two years out of the country. He wouldn't be able to contact anyone. They were going to go kill demons, not like the initiative, but similar. When Buffy caught him with a vamp (with Spike's help) he told her this and that he would stay if he felt he was needed in Sunnydale. But after she realized she needed him (thanks to a pep talk from Xander) she missed his helecopter by mere seconds and Riley left Sunnydale- forever?
Quotable Riley:
Riley-"These spells-they really work? I mean, can you really 'turn your enemies inside out?' Or 'learn to excrete gold coins?'"
Anya:"That one's not so much fun." (From "Superstar")
Anya/ Anyanka
Anya came to Sunnydale as a vengance demon. She used her powers for Cordelia who, hurt over what had happened between Xander and Willow, wished that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale. (She blamed Buffy for all her problems.) The result was a Sunnydale ruled by vampires and demons. Willow and Xander were vamps, Angel was their "puppy" whom Willow tortured for sexual pleasure, and Oz and Giles were a few who did their best to help mortals survive. The watcher had arrived in Sunnydale, but the Slayer never did. Eventually the Slayer did arrive, but without the training she should have gotten from Giles, she was killed by the Master (hm, sound familiar?). Giles did manage to smash Anya's power source- her amulet- and the world was back to normal. Except Anya was no longer a demon-she was mortal. After she adjusted to the fact she began seducing Xander. Their relationship has since blossomed and Anya has become part owner in Giles' Magic Shop.
Quotable Anya:
"For a thousand years I wielded the power of the wish. I brought ruin upon the heads of unfaithful men. I ofered destruction and chaos for the pleasure of the lower beings. I was feared and worshipped across the mortal globe and now I'm stuck at Sunnydale High! A mortal! A child! And I'm flunking math!"(from "Doppelgangland")
Dawn Summers
Buffy's sister. She's not really her sister at all. The show refers to her as "the key." The God of a demon demension is looking for it/her possibly and most likely to open the demension into Buffy's demension. The key is, um, an energy that a bunch of monks transformed into a human and sent to the slayer to protect. The monks made false memories and implanted them in everyone's mind that is involved with Dawn. Buffy discovered she wasn't human when she was attempting to see if someone had placed a spell on her mother (it ended up being a brain tumor). Dawn is dealing with her sister dying and coming back again, her mother's death, as well as the painful growing up stuff teenagers deal with.
Quotable Dawn:
"Like Tara. She and Willow are both witches. They do spells and stuff, which is so much cooler than slaying. I told Mom one time I wish they'd teach me some of the things they do together. And then she got really quiet and made me go upstairs. Huh, I guess her generation isn't cool with witchcraft."
(from "Real Me")
Tara Maclay
Tara met Willow in a Wicca group at UC SunnyDale their freashman year. A friendship developed and from that a relationship. Tara is a very powerful witch, but until recently, not much was revealed about her. In "Family" is was revealed that she came from a long family of witches. At first Tara was very shy and withdrawn, but as her relationship with Willow deepened she has opened up more and felt more accepted in the Scooby Gang. In fact, in "Family" Buffy stood up against Tara's family and the rest of the gang followed. Spike even went so far as to deck her to prove she was human by the searing stab of pain that followed his hitting her.
Quotable Tara:
Willow: It's fine, I don't need to be snuggled.
Tara: Vixen.
(from "Family")
I know I know, if I have Angel and Cordy, shouldn't I have Wes and Gunn?! I'm working on it.
